Back to School Virtual Series

Join us for this five part Series! 

The goal of the series is to help teachers create classrooms where students feel connected, communicate with purpose, take risks with language, and grow in proficiency, all while giving teachers sustainable structures that make this possible every day.

The OWL Back-to-School Virtual Series is five interactive sessions designed to give you the ideas, strategies, and support you need as you begin the year.

Together, we’ll explore how to build community, increase target language and student-to-student interaction, plan for proficiency, integrate literacy, and respond to different levels and learner needs.

This Series is all about what you need now. You’ll leave each session with practical ideas you can use immediately, come back to share what’s working, then together work through challenges, ask questions, and continue building from there.

By the end of the five-part series,  you will be able to:

• Build community and belonging through intentional routines, relationships, movement, play, and meaningful interaction.
• Establish a target-language-rich environment and develop routines that encourage students to communicate with one another from the beginning.
• Increase student engagement and ownership by shifting more of the thinking, talking, interacting, and meaning-making to students.
• Plan with purpose using PPATH, connecting Pairings & Groupings, Prompts & Questions, Accountability, Transitions, and Hooks to create cohesive learning experiences.
• Differentiate for proficiency by designing prompts, questions, interactions, and tasks appropriate for novice, intermediate, and advanced learners.
• Integrate all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—through authentic literacy and multiliteracies experiences.
• Strengthen student-to-student interaction by creating multiple opportunities for learners to communicate, negotiate meaning, exchange ideas, and build upon one another's language.
• Assess learning authentically through observation, interaction, reflection, and formative strategies that reveal what students can actually do with language.
• Respond to real classroom challenges including varying proficiency levels, reluctant learners, maintaining target language, pacing, participation, and engagement.
• Develop sustainable teaching practices that allow teachers to plan with greater clarity, respond to students in the moment, and continually reflect upon and refine their practice.

Throughout the series, you’ll continue learning, experiencing, applying, reflecting, and refining, with ongoing support as you put it all into practice. Can't wait to see you there!
